CRITICAL INFORMATION UPDATES: PPPI Fund Allocation to get our park!!! There is an opportunity for us to get this sports park using PPPI funding but WE MUST be heard by the PPPI team. I went to the first meeting and met with the director for several minutes. She understands and agrees with us but her hands are tied unless we the community give her adequate numbers of requests for this park. There is no set number but we are competing against other projects so we all need to vote. Here's how:
You could go to the community meetings and vote BUT IT IS MUCH EASIER TO VOTE ON THE WEBSITE. Once there, the only way to vote / request our park, one that meets our needs is to go to: http://phoenix.gov/PRL/parksdev.html and click on the 3rd hyperlink (Vote on your priorities for future Parks and Preserve Initiative projects). This will take you to the voting page where you will have to scroll to the bottom to write in, "SPORTS PARK AT 40TH & MCDOWELL". Be sure to click on the radio button.
NOTE: I believe the site tracks your IP address so you can only vote once from each computer. You will have to find another computer or remove the cookie if more than one person (18 or older - legal to vote) uses the same computer in the same household.
PLEASE take the time to do this as soon as you have a minute... AND SPREAD THE WORD!!!
PPPI Community Meetings: Prop A passed with 83 percent in favor of the Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative (PPPI). The measure authorizes a modest sales tax (one penny on a $10 purchase) that will provide funds to save thousands of acres of state trust land, make improvements to neighborhood and community parks and build regional parks. PLEASE visit the Support page to get the date, time and location of the community meetings being held by the city to get input from groups just like ours.
June 17th Bid Day: There were NO SUCCESSFUL BIDDERS at the state land auction for the proposed site on June 17th. Even with the lack of competition that the city said would drive up the price, the city did not place a bid either. The next auction date is July 31st... a few short weeks away. PLEASE, Call the Mayor and your City Councilman and ask them to do everything in their power to keep this land for a community recreational facility. Please visit the Support page for contact information.

PhoenixSportsComplex.org was formed in late 2007 as a grassroots effort by residents of District 6 and District 8 when a request for a practice soccer field identified that in this area of Phoenix the fields just do not exist. Subsequent conversations identified that within this landlocked part of the city there was actually very little land available where any reasonable number of fields could be built. The only location, currently owned by the state, is up for sale and developers want it for condos. Once it is sold to the developers all youth and adult sports within our districts will forever be under served. Identify the critically inadequate number of fields for soccer and other field sports in our districts, Develop a common sense plan that exploits a partnership between public and private that will provide facilities for future generations of residents with less taxpayer funding, Gather support within the community to speak as one voice that cannot be ignored by our elected officials, Obtain the last and only available land for a sports park that can insure a healthy future for our residents, help reduce area crime and increase property values. As of 2008, the City is experiencing a budget deficit as a result of a slowdown in the economy. As a result the City has proposed huge budget cuts to save about $90 million. The proposed cuts include up to 500 + staff positions in the Parks and Recreation Department and eliminates all supervised youth sports programs. There is less money now but it won't be that way forever. If this land is not secured before developers grab it there will be no opportunity for future services. Please sign our petition and contact your elected officials requesting they support recreational sports in District 6 and District 8. Thank you, PhoenixSportsComplex.org
